monuments and hallmarks:Le pont d'Iena : Napoléon I ordered the construction
of the Iéna bridge to commemorate his 1806 victory there against the Prussians
. It was built between 1808 and 1814, but narrowly escaped being blown up in 1815
when his Empire collapsed. The bridge was enlarged in 1937 because of the increase
in traffic and the demands of the Universal Exposition of that year. Le pont de
l'Alma The existing bridge was built in 1970-74 to replace one built by Napoéon
III to commemorate his 1854 victory in the Crimea. Only one of the four statues
that embellished its predecessor has been preserved. The Pont de l'Alma became
world-famous recently because of the tragic death of Princess Diana nearby .
Le pont Alexa III : This bridge is classed as a 'Monument historique,' representative
of late XIXth century architecture and decoration. It was built between 1897 and
1900, and inaugurated as the Universal Exposition of 1900 opened. |
