 | In 1769, the duke of Chartres bought a land of one hectare next to the street of Courcelles. Between 1773 and 1778, he managed to gather a field of 12 hectares after successive purchases. Carmontelle, the designer, set up different points of view and a river. There are evocations of small constructions representing false vestiges of the temple of Mars, a minaret, a Dutch windmill, a naumachie in the oval basin and an Egyptian pyramid! The Parisian called this place "the madness of Chartres." In 1793, during the French revolution, the park became an English garden with grass and trees. The new enclosure of Paris known as the "farmers' general enclosure" surrounded the garden. One of the last remains of this enclosure is the rotunda built by Claude Nicolas Ledoux located by the boulevard of Courcelles. The garden became a place of ball and festivity. It is there, where the first parachute jump of in the history took place: on October 22, 1797 Andre-Jacques Garnerin jumped from a montgolfier and landed in front of a crowd, which was certain he was going to break his neck. |
